PoE watchdog keeps restarting an access point: verify the health check

Explore the guide library · Power and resilience

A failed ping can reflect an address or policy change rather than a frozen powered device.

Inspect the restart trigger: Configured health-check target; Missed response threshold; Switch cycles PoE power
An automated recovery action is only as reliable as the condition used to trigger it.

Some PoE switches can restart a powered device when a health check fails. This can recover a genuinely unresponsive access point, but an incorrect target or unsuitable check can also cause repeated unnecessary power cycles.

Confirm that the switch is initiating the restart

Inspect its supported logs and PoE status. Compare the restart times with the configured monitoring interval. NETGEAR describes self-healing that stops and restores port power after a device fails to respond under the configured conditions.

Verify the target address

If the access point’s address changed, the switch may be testing an old address. Check the current management inventory and ensure the target belongs to the device on the intended port. Use an appropriate stable addressing plan where supported.

Check reachability from the monitoring path

A management VLAN or firewall policy may prevent the expected response. A device can provide normal client service while a particular ping path fails. Do not weaken unrelated network protections simply to make a health indicator turn green.

Review the timing

  • Normal device startup duration.
  • Firmware-update and maintenance behavior.
  • Failure threshold and recovery delay.
  • Whether the check can trigger during planned outages.

A recovery policy that restarts the device before it finishes booting can prevent normal service from returning.

Correct and observe

Have the administrator adjust the supported monitoring configuration to match the actual device and maintenance needs. Verify that healthy service remains stable and that the policy does not conceal a genuine cable or power-budget fault.

Keep the check’s purpose and target documented. Automated recovery should reduce downtime, not replace diagnosis. If the same failure repeats after every restart, investigate the underlying condition and save the relevant evidence instead of relying indefinitely on a cycle of forced power interruptions.

Why might a PoE watchdog repeatedly restart a working access point?

Some PoE switches can restart a powered device when a health check fails. This can recover a genuinely unresponsive access point, but an incorrect target or unsuitable check can also cause repeated unnecessary power cycles. Inspect its supported logs and PoE status. Compare the restart times with the configured monitoring interval. NETGEAR describes self-healing that stops and restores port power after a device fails to respond under the configured conditions.

Why can an access point boot yet report insufficient PoE power?

An access point can boot successfully while operating with reduced capabilities because of its power allocation. If a radio or interface is unavailable, check the device's reported power mode before treating the symptom as a wireless configuration fault. Cisco's current access-point power guidance describes model-dependent profiles and negotiation. Different products can respond differently to limited power. Do not assume that every access point disables the same radio or accepts the same power standard.

What does PoE port priority control during a power shortage?

Some managed PoE switches let you assign port priorities. These settings can influence which devices retain power when the available PoE budget is insufficient, but they do not increase the switch's total power capacity. List the access points, cameras and other powered devices connected to each port. Decide which services are essential for the installation. On a shared network, that decision belongs with the responsible administrator rather than being inferred from port numbers.

What should a UPS power to keep an internet connection working?

A battery backup for the router is useful only if the other devices needed for connectivity also remain powered. For fiber service, that may include an ONT, a switch and the access point used by the household. Draw the route from the provider handoff to the device that must stay online. Identify each powered component and its location. A remote mesh node on another circuit may stop working even while the main router continues running.
