Do a garden access point and a building bridge do the same job?

An outdoor access point and a point-to-point bridge may both look like ways to extend a network outside, but they solve different problems. Decide whether you need service for roaming client devices or a fixed link to another building. An appropriately installed outdoor access point can provide client coverage in the intended area. It needs a suitable upstream connection and power arrangement. Plan its position around where people will use devices, not simply where mounting is easiest.

Why does copper-clad aluminum cable matter for PoE?

When purchasing Ethernet cable, look for the conductor material as well as the category label. Copper-clad aluminum, commonly abbreviated CCA, is not the same construction as a suitable copper conductor. Fluke Networks highlights resistance and compliance concerns with CCA cabling. PoE carries electrical power along the data cable. Resistance and balance affect that path as well as ordinary data performance. An installation that appears to pass light traffic does not thereby prove suitable behavior under the intended powered-device load.

What belongs in a fiber link plan for a detached building?

A detached office can benefit from a planned fiber connection when distance, electrical considerations or future capacity make an ordinary copper run unsuitable. The useful comparison includes the whole installation, not simply the price of a fiber patch cable. List the wired devices and wireless coverage required. The remote building normally needs suitable network equipment and its own power arrangement. Optical fiber does not deliver conventional Ethernet PoE to an access point at the other end.

How should I test a new mesh kit before keeping it?

A mesh kit passing its setup wizard is the beginning of validation. Before the return period ends, test whether it actually solves the household problems that justified the purchase. Examples include a stable call in the upstairs office, smooth streaming in the television room and usable coverage on a particular patio. Be specific about the device and location. “Faster Wi-Fi everywhere” is difficult to measure consistently.
