Amped RE2600M placement: test the router link before moving into a dead zone

Browse the topic library

Applies to: Amped Wireless ATHENA-EX RE2600M. Indicator behavior and thresholds below come from its user guide.

An extender must receive a usable router signal where you place it. Putting it in the room with the weakest reception can leave its upstream connection weak as well. For the RE2600M, measure that link before judging the signal bars on your phone.

Use the model’s signal indicator

The RE2600M manual recommends at least 70% upstream signal or a green Signal Strength LED. After power-on, allow one to three minutes for that LED to register. When extending both bands, inspect both home-network signals in the setup scan rather than assuming that a good 2.4 GHz result proves the 5 GHz link is also good.

Compare three candidate locations

Start near the main router, then test two practical positions toward the problem room. Use the same client and the same activity at each position. Keep the router, extender settings and test device unchanged so that location is the variable you are comparing.

Record Why it matters
Location and time Lets you repeat a promising result.
Upstream reading for each selected band Separates a weak router link from a weak client link.
Normal browsing or call result Checks the task you actually need the network to perform.
Dropouts during the test Helps distinguish a brief good reading from a stable connection.

Choose stability, then recheck the problem room

Keep the strongest practical candidate and test from the place where you normally work. A device showing a strong connection to the extender still depends on the extender’s link back to the router. If every candidate has poor upstream reception, moving the extender farther away will not repair that path; consider a different network layout.

Interpret performance realistically

The product’s advertised wireless rates are not guaranteed download speeds. Amped notes that building materials, network conditions and client equipment affect performance. A better comparison is whether the same video call or file transfer works reliably in your target room after the placement change. Save your location notes for future troubleshooting rather than repeatedly resetting the device when furniture or equipment moves.
